Parenting, islands style: hard labor for life

This is from a guest editorial in The San Pedro Sun in Belize. A better quality, scanned copy to come (when I find a scanner here!). The gist: parents are enablers. In the past, kids “breaking the rules meant consequences. Spankings, weeks of hard labor in the milpa, or if you broke a big, bad rule, you were taken out of school, and put to do hard labor for life. Or until you turned 18, after which it was almost always too late to go back to school.”
